Buttermilk Labs
In partnership with the Trust for Governors Island, BJH, North River Company, and Barretto Bay Strategies are repositioning Building 301 on Governors Island into an active commercial use that will advance the Trust’s development vision for Governors Island and its Center for Climate Solutions. As the “Phase 0” project for the Center, Buttermilk Labs will be a vital and dynamic center of climate technology commercialization and deployment, with the mission to advance climate solutions across a wide range of disciplines and sectors.
The project will be comprised of small office suites, R&D flex/lab space, classrooms, convening areas, co-working space, indoor and outdoor event space, and year-round F&B service. Office uses will specifically be marketed to businesses and organizations in the sustainability and climate adaptation sector. Our mission is to:
• Advance solutions to climate change by nurturing a community of emerging businesses and established institutions dedicated to climate change mitigation and the transition to a low-carbon economy;
• Cluster talent in resilience engineering, sustainable design, and the growing offshore wind supply chain, offering the region a dynamic and integrated model for catalyzing innovation across sectors;
• Expand employment opportunities for underserved communities through industry events, internships, apprenticeships, workforce development programs, and STEM education; and
• Set an example of sustainable adaptive reuse.
Buttermilk Labs at the Center for Climate Solutions will be designed to the highest standards of historic preservation to meet U.S. Department of the Interior’s requirements for historic tax credits. Furthermore, our design seeks to achieve exceptional energy performance and mitigate our environmental impact by targeting LEED Gold certification, as well as implementing certain Passive House strategies.
